GREEN EYED LANDLORD SUPPORTS TENANTS

BACKGROUND:
Property management company TCN was already quite a green business but an assessment by a Go Green Plus Greening Business Adviser has resulted in extending its environmental practices further. The company already bought half its energy from renewable sources, provided bike racks for tenants  and used recycled stationery and eco cleaning products.

The assessment and tailored action plan were drawn up as part of southlondon.biz’ Go Green Plus programme, encouraging small and medium sized businesses to take action on waste and energy, water and CO2 reduction by reducing, reusing and recycling. TCN was identified as one business that could potentially make financial and environmental savings through the service.

ACHIEVEMENTS:
Tenants at its Brixton property Piano House now have a recycling scheme collecting paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and glass. In addition free Hippos have been ordered to reduce the amount of water used in cisterns and Carbon Trust “switch off” stickers and posters promoting energy saving have been used throughout the building.

Laura Hansford (pictured), property manager at TCN, has asked local supplier Alan Lite to stock and supply them with LED replacements for its bulbs. In response to its tenants, including Go Green Plus clients Jeannette Pritchard of JP Creative, it is considering undertaking a travel plan so tenants can benefit from free bicycle stands.

Following advice from Go Green Plus Phillipe Castiang of Opus Café, who will be opening an onsite café, TCN has negotiated additional recycling facilities of plastic bottles and glass for the tenants with the current recycling provider and will be diverting rain water to water vegetation in the area around the new bike stands.

Laura Hansford found the advice and support provided by Go Green Plus invaluable and is delighted to have reached the final of the 2010 Lambeth Awards for Best Green Business. “We have already recommended the Go Green Plus initiative to our tenants and on this basis we would definitely recommend the service to other landlords and businesses in the south London area,” she said.

Go Green Plus is run by southlondon.biz and a partnership of six South London local authorities – Kingston, Lambeth, Merton, Richmond, Sutton and Wandsworth. The wide-ranging support programme is open to small and medium sized businesses (1-250 employees) and offers 12 hours of free advice and support to encourage businesses to take action on waste and energy, water and/or CO2 reduction by reducing, reusing and recycling.
